Becoming a mum is one of the most life-changing experiences. It’s beautiful, messy, and often overwhelming. If you’re preparing for motherhood or just starting your journey, here are 10 things I wish someone had told me before I became a mum.

1. It’s Okay to Not Have It All Figured Out

You might feel like you need to know everything—from the perfect swaddling technique to the best feeding schedule. The truth is, no one has all the answers. Trust your instincts, and remember, learning as you go is part of the journey.

2. Sleep Will Be a Luxury (But It Won’t Last Forever)

The sleepless nights are tough, but they’re temporary. Create a bedtime routine early, lean on your support system, and give yourself grace. Remember, naps are for you too!

3. Your Body Will Change, and That’s Okay

Motherhood transforms your body in ways you might not expect. Whether it’s stretch marks, scars, or extra weight, these changes tell the story of the amazing life you created. Embrace them.

4. You Don’t Have to Do It Alone

Accept help when it’s offered. Whether it’s a friend bringing over a meal or a partner taking over night feeds, leaning on others doesn’t make you any less capable.

5. Every Baby is Different

What worked for someone else’s baby might not work for yours, and that’s okay. Be open to experimenting and finding what works for your little one.

6. Your Relationship Will Change

Having a baby can shift dynamics in your relationship. Communication is key. Make time for each other and be patient as you navigate this new chapter together.

7. Mom Guilt is Real, But It Doesn’t Define You

You’ll question yourself a lot: “Am I doing enough?” or “Am I doing it right?” Remind yourself that being a good mum doesn’t mean being perfect. Show up with love, and that’s enough.

8. There’s No One-Size-Fits-All for Parenting

From sleep training to feeding, everyone has an opinion. Take advice with a grain of salt and make decisions that feel right for your family.

9. You Need to Take Care of Yourself Too

It’s easy to put yourself last, but your well-being matters. Whether it’s a walk, a hobby, or 10 minutes with a cup of tea, make time for things that recharge you.

10. You’re Stronger Than You Think

Motherhood will test you in ways you can’t imagine, but you’ll also discover an incredible strength you never knew you had. Celebrate the small wins and remind yourself that you’re doing an amazing job.

Final Thoughts

Motherhood is a journey filled with highs, lows, and everything in between. It’s messy, beautiful, and uniquely yours. No one has all the answers, but as long as you lead with love, you’re on the right path. If you’re a mum (or mum-to-be), what’s one thing you wish you’d known before your journey began?
